Women’s basketball begins season against Louisiana-Monroe

Womens basketball begins season against Louisiana-Monroe

The TCU women’s basketball team looks to start the season on a positive note against Louisiana-Monroe Saturday night.

Coming off a blowout win against Southern Arkansas in an exhibition game, 76-45, the Frogs (0-0) now turn to the task of getting their first regular season win.

To do that, they must face a Warhawk team that won 10 games last season.

ULM hasn’t won a conference opener since 2010, and is 1-3 in the overall series with TCU. Their only win came in 1981, and the last meeting between the two teams resulted in a 65-44 TCU win in Fort Worth.

Warhawk seniors and leading scorers from last season Ashleigh Simmons and Alexar Tugler both were voted to preseason All-Sun Belt teams. Sophomore Alayshia Hunter looks to continue her dominance in the paint, as she led ULM in blocks and rebounds per game as a freshman.

THE MAGIC NUMBER: 60

For head coach Jeff Mittie and the Horned Frogs, defense will be paramount. Louisiana-Monroe was 1-14 when held below 60 points last year, but was 8-6 when scoring above that mark.

THE MATCHUP TO WATCH: Latricia Lovings vs. Alayshia Hunter

Her first test in the paint will come against Hunter. Mittie’s concern for rebounding will be tested in the game, and Lovings’ performance might be a foreshadowing of things to come in Big XII play.

THE EDGE

TCU has the edge in the quality of opponents faced. The Big XII is much more competitive than the Sun Belt, and that experience could prove crucial.

Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum Saturday night.
