A New York Times best-selling author will be visiting TCU on Tuesday to discuss his latest book on the invention of the birth control pill.

“When writing a book you spend so much time by yourself so it will be nice to meet people who have an interest in [the book] and discuss the thing that you have been working so hard on,” said the author of The Birth of the Pill, Jonathan Eig.

According to Eig’s website, the book is centered around the diverse group who created the birth control pill against overpowering odds.

“In one word, it is a book about rebellion. It is the story of four characters changing the world around them during a time that did not accept such a thing,” said Eig.

Eig said he began his research for the book in 2011, studying the scientific papers of the contraceptive pill and conducting interviews with the characters’ colleagues and families. He finished the book in fall 2013 and it was later published in 2014.

“One reason I wrote this book is because I think [the pill] is the most important invention in modern history,” Eig said.

His other publications include: Luckiest Man (2005), Opening Day (2007) and Get Capone (2010). He is currently working on a biography of Muhammad Ali.

Eig is a graduate from Northwestern University with a degree in journalism. He was a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Dallas Morning News, Wall Street Journal and the Chicago magazine. He has also been a guest on NBC’s Today Show and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Eig will be on campus Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Moudy North building in Room 141. A book signing will follow. The event is free to TCU and the public.
