The No. 2-ranked TCU baseball team picked up a 16-4 win over Southern Illinois at Lupton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Senior center fielder Cody Jones led the offensive attack for TCU (2-0) going 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs in the win.

“I was seeing the ball well today,” Jones said. “I just tried to let it get deep and stay inside of it.”

After a slow start in the opener Friday night, the TCU offense wasted no time in the 12-run win. The Frogs posted six runs in the first inning, highlighted by freshman Evan Skoug’s three-run home run. Skoug finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

“[SIU pitcher Kyle Pruemer) threw me the first pitch slider that was down, so I had a pretty good idea he was going to come back at me with a fastball,” Skoug said. “I just tried to put a good swing on it and it went a long way.”

Shortstop Keaton Jones also hit his first career home run, slugging a two-run shot in the third inning. The senior from Laguna Beach, California, was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

The Frogs would score in each of the first four innings to build a 13-3 lead. Eleven different players had hits for TCU in the win. Garrett Crain was the only Frog starter without a hit, but still managed to score a run.

TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle notices the difference on the offensive side of the ball this season.

“I think we have a lot of versatility with all of the left handed hitters in our lineup,” Schlossnagle said. “We also have a lot of speed this year.”

Sophomore pitcher Brian Howard (1-0) picked up the win in relief for TCU. He pitched two innings, allowing a run on two hits in relief of starter Tyler Alexander.

Alexander threw four innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

“He was OK early, but it’s tough to get in a rhythm when you have to sit in the dugout for thirty minutes at a time,” Schlossnagle said of Alexander. “He’s had better days and he will have better

Sophomore Kyle Pruemer (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Southern Illinois (0-2). He lasted only two innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits for the Salukis.

TCU concludes its three-game series with Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon. The Frogs are scheduled to start Alex Young against Southern Illinois’ Alex Lesiak.

First pitch at Lupton Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
