In February, five TCU football players participated the in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, but their results fell blow their expectations.

On Friday, TCU’s Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility was filled with current and former Horned Frog football players, NFL scouts, reporters and fans for TCU’s Pro Day.

This time, many of the NFL hopeful Frogs were able to put up better numbers for the scouts in attendance.

Linebacker Paul Dawson, who is said to be the Frogs most sought after prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft, improved his 40-yard-dash time from 4.93 seconds to 4.78 on Friday. He also increased his vertical jump from 28 inches to 30.

“I did okay.” Dawson said. “I’ve practiced better than I did today, but I still did pretty good I’ll say. The scouts said I did pretty good.”

Dawson’s below average 40-yard-dash time was not the only concern for scouts after his showing at the combine as reports surfaced that he was often late to his workouts at TCU. Both Dawson and head coach Gary Patterson explained Dawson’s reputation for his work ethic.

“That tardiness, that was my early years at TCU,” Dawson said. “It wasn’t a problem my last year. I started being a professional my senior year at TCU. It’s not an issue anymore, I think teams understand that and they can see where I’m coming from.”

Patterson said he expects Dawson to be better about being on time once he becomes a professional.

“You know, there’s a lot of guys like that.” Patterson said. “Guys change a lot when they get fines. When you start talking money and you start doing all that… Paul is a little bit more on time with a little bit more intention. Some guys don’t know the difference and I think Paul knows the difference.”

Dawson was not the only Pro Day participant to noticeably improve his 40-yard-dash time. Safety Chris Hackett ran a 4.53 on Pro Day after recording a 4.81 at the combine.

“Especially for me at the combine, I feel like I didn’t do as well as I wanted to do, and I came out here and did what I wanted to do,” Hackett said.

Running back B.J. Catalon ran a faster 40-yard-dash as well. He recorded a 4.43, which is a significant improvement over his 4.57 he ran in Indianapolis.

Patterson said he thinks preparation was the reason for his player’s improvements.

“I think we ran better than the guys who ran at the combine,” he said. “It looks like they all prepared, it looks like they were ready.”
