Frogs passed up in first round of MLB Draft

Standout TCU pitchers Matt Purke and Kyle Winkler were passed up on the opening day of the MLB draft Monday, which will most likely result in the duo returning to pitch for the Horned Frogs in the 2012 season.

Purke was originally drafted in the first round by the Texas Rangers in 2009, but could not come to terms on a contract with Rangers management, and decided to enroll at TCU instead.

Both Purke and Winkler have been stellar in their time in Fort Worth, catching the eyes of several scouts.

What may have cost the duo a chance at getting drafted in the first round were the various injuries both suffered during the 2011 season.

Kevin Goldstein, a writer for BaseballProspectus.com wrote in an email that teams were cautious about spending millions of dollars on a player with injury concerns.

Day two of the draft, which covers rounds 2-30, will take place Tuesday at 11 a.m. The final day of the draft, which covers rounds 31-50 will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
