Quick Sports: Frogs ranked 14 in BCS poll; Rifle team on 8-win streak

Football

The Horned Frogs went from unranked last week in the Associated Press poll to No. 15 this week and No. 14 in the first BCS poll that came out Monday. The Frogs beat then-No. 9 Brigham Young University 32-7 on Thursday. Junior defensive end Jerry Hughes had four sacks and forced two fumbles to earn the honor of Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week. The team was also named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America.

Rifle

The rifle team defeated The Citadel 4,635-4,462 to extend its regular season win streak to eight. Juniors Erin Lorenzen and Lauren Sullivan both scored 1,164 aggregate points to help the Horned Frogs extend their win streak.

Cross Country

Junior Festus Kigen finished in 10th place to lead the men’s cross country team at the Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Sophomore Tanja Ivandic finished 53rd overall to lead the women’s team.

Volleyball

Freshman Megan Munce was named co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Week. Munce recorded 12 service aces in Friday’s match against Air Force. Those 12 aces set a new conference record, breaking the previous record of nine set in 2002. All but one ace came in the first set Friday, including a stretch of five in a row.

Soccer

The soccer team defeated the Utah Utes 2-0 Saturday to improve to 11-3-1 (3-2-0) in conference play. Freshman Jordan Calhoun scored her 13th goal of the season in the match.
