Texas Southern fell to junior Jordan Calhoun as she netted two goals and gave TCU a 7-0 win Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

For the match, the Horned Frogs outshot the Lady Tigers, 46-4, including 25-1 in the second half. Overall, TCU posted its most shots in a match since firing 57 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2008. TCU’s 46 shot attempts on Sunday were the second most-ever by a Horned Frog squad. Simply put, the Frogs dominated the entire game on Sunday at Jane Justin Field, not allowing TSU to post its second shot attempt until the 44th minute of the first half. Texas Southern goalkeeper Erika Vasquez, who faced constant pressure from the TCU attack on Sunday, collected 18 saves, which ranks as the fourth-best total in stadium history.

“We responded in the second half and were much sharper,” said head coach Dan Abdalla. “Its now a matter of maintaining the intensity we had in the second half for an entire game. Overall, I was pleased that we were able to find a little bit of rhythm, but now we have to build on that and keep improving.”

Freshman Kaitlin Hellmann put the Frogs on the board 3 minutes, 39 seconds into the match, connecting on her first career goal as a Horned Frog. On the play, fellow freshman Kristen Barg crossed a ball into the box and Hellmann put the finishing touches on it, heading the ball into the back of the net.

Hellmann almost had her second goal of the day a few moments later, but her header hit the crossbar. Junior Kaylie Garcia appeared to have given TCU an early 2-0 lead in the match, but the Frogs were called for offsides on the play, nullifying the goal in the 16th minute.

Halfway through the first half, Calhoun gave TCU a 2-0 advantage, scoring off an assist by Alex Mechalske. On the play, the junior from Oklahoma darted into the box from the right side and placed the ball past Vasquez off her back foot.

The Frogs missed on several scoring opportunities late in the half, including one deep in Tiger territory by Mechalske, but took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

TCU continued its relentless pressure in the second half as Garcia cracked the scoring column in the 50th minute of the match, connecting on a shot from just outside the box into the lower left corner of the goal off an assist by Chelsea Cody.

Cody made quick work of the Tigers in the 57th minute, scoring only her second career goal off a cross from Hellmann inside the box.

Calhoun notched her second goal of the day a few moments later, drilling a shot from the middle of the field past Vasquez to increase the TCU lead to 5-0. Garcia tried to give the Purple and White an overwhelming 6-0 lead off a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, but Vasquez came up with another big save to keep the score at 5-0 in favor of the Frogs.

A few moments later, Katie Taylor, a junior defender, appeared to have scored from inside the box off a header, but the Frogs were called for offsides on the play. Taylor would not be denied in the 80th minute though, finding the back of the net off a corner kick by Mechalske, who also had a goal nullified earlier in the half because of offsides.

Freshman Brittany Slyman, who had a header taken off the board late in the second half, put the finishing touches on a dominating day at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, scoring her first career goal from the left side of the box in the 84th minute.

Overall, TCU, who recorded 10 corner kicks for the contest, had 16 different player’s record shot attempts on Sunday in front of 1,068 spectators. Calhoun led the offense with six shots and two goals, while Garcia and Slyman each scored a goal and posted five shots apiece, respectively.

The TCU defense, who didn’t allow TSU to post a shot-on-goal in the second half until the 70th minute, recorded its first shutout of the 2010 season. Sophomore Kira Michelson-Bartlett saved three shots on Sunday.

With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 1-1-0, while Texas Southern dropped to 0-2-0 on the season.

TCU will next be in action against nationally ranked USC on Aug. 27. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
