Despite winning performances in a handful of events, the swimming & diving teams could not pull out a victory against the Wyoming on Saturday.A week ago, the Horned Frogs took care of the Air Force Falcons in the University Rec Center by a narrow margin and head coach Richard Sybesma said he had a feeling Saturday’s meet was going to produce similar results. Unfortunately, this week had TCU on the losing end.

“We felt like it would be down to the wire again, but we didn’t quit hit enough spots,” Sybesma said.

The big points the H2O Frogs were lacking on the scoreboard came in events where the team would actually win the heat. The problem was that a second- or third-place swimmer to accompany a first-place finish was not always in the cards.

This type of intermittent scoring allowed the Cowboys to stack up points in many events, widening the scoring margin.

“I thought we started off well, but we had one of those days were you are trying your best and things don’t always go your way,” senior Josh Bagby said.

The meet was clinched before the final relay races, but an element of pride had to be preserved before closing out the meet.

The 400-yard freestyle relay became a morale booster after the team found its chances of winning to be nonexistent.

“We thought before the race that if they can have the meet at least let’s take this relay,” Bagby said.

And take it the H20 Frogs did. Bagby anchored the comeback in the final leg of the relay as he managed to make up a deficit of .3 seconds going into his 100-yard segment.

“The guy’s relays were great today,” Sybesma said. “They came in and they know how to win.”

The women’s side was a lopsided affair on the scorecards, however, the races did not disappoint Sybesma, he said.

“I’m real proud of how our girls team is coming along,” Sybesma said. “We fell a little short today, but we’ll be ready for them in conference.”

A bright moment for the women’s team came during the distance races when freshman Jessica Miles finished the 1,000-yard freestyle just 2.5 seconds off the school record.

As for the other freshmen, Sybesma said, the team is learning and gaining experience each week.

Other notable performances on the men’s side came from senior captain Jonathon Berrittini, who won each of his events and freshman Jeff Gettel. Both swimmers took first and second place in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke.
